Recognizing & Managing Emotions

Recognizing and managing emotions helps children identify what they're feeling, understand why they feel that way, and choose healthy responses. These important self-awareness skills help children feel more in control of their emotions and build confidence in themselves.

However, it can be challenging for children to recognize and manage their emotions, especially when feelings are new or intense, triggers aren't obvious, or healthy responses haven't yet become habits. This isn't a sign of being “overly emotional”—these skills can be strengthened with practice, patience, and the right support.

Through activities and coaching, BIGFeels NYC helps children develop their capacity to name their feelings, understand what causes them, and respond in ways that serve them well.
