Social Awareness &
Relationship Skills

BIGFeels NYC supports children in building empathy, understanding others' perspectives, making friends, and communicating their needs with confidence.

Social awareness and relationship skills help children connect with others, resolve conflicts constructively, and navigate the social world with greater ease and understanding.

With over 15 years of experience, our team uses evidence-based tools that promote lasting skills for children ages 3-10. BIGFeels NYC supports children in New York City both in-home and virtually. No diagnosis required.

Understanding Social Awareness & Relationship Skills

Social awareness helps children build a foundation for cooperation and making friends by taking the perspective of others, showing empathy, and better understanding social norms. Relationship skills like clear communication, active listening, and setting boundaries build on that foundation to maintain healthy friendships.

These are teachable skills based in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and the latest social science. By building skills like perspective-taking, conflict resolution, and self-advocacy, children are better able to connect with others and communicate effectively.

Through joyful, play-filled sessions, we empower children to:

  • Understand how others might be feeling and why

  • Show empathy and kindness toward friends and peers

  • Read social cues like facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice

  • Start conversations and join group activities with confidence

  • Handle disagreements and peer conflict constructively

  • Express their needs clearly and set boundaries

  • Ask for help when they need support

  • Cooperate, share, and work well with others

Every child develops social awareness and relationship skills at their own pace. We also coach each child holistically, covering a variety of skill areas that might also be associated with self-awareness, self-management, or responsible decision making.

Each week, parents receive detailed updates and strategies for reinforcing learning at home.

"She's just learning to share and take turns. We totally get it now. How can we ask for what she needs when she's still learning to figure out what that even is? We feel like we're learning along with her, and like she's getting a huge head start."
