Self-Awareness Skills For Kids

Building self-awareness skills helps children recognize their emotions, identify their strengths and challenges, and develop a sense of confidence and optimism. With over 15 years of experience, our team uses evidence-based tools that promote lasting skills for children ages 3-10.

Self-awareness connects to emotion regulation and social skills, helping children understand themselves, manage their thoughts and feelings, and navigate relationships and challenges with greater ease.

BIGFeels NYC supports children across New York City, in-home or virtually. No diagnosis required.

Understanding Self-Awareness Skills For Kids

Kid's self awareness empowers them to recognize emotions and thoughts, understand how feelings influence their behavior, and know their own strengths and areas for growth. These are foundational skills that set the stage for emotion regulation, healthy relationships, and resilience. Through self-awareness, children can navigate challenges and confidence and become more resilient in their daily interactions at home, school, and with friends.

Through joyful, play-filled sessions, we empower children to:

  • Recognize and name what they're feeling in the moment

  • Understand what triggers their emotions and why

  • Connect their thoughts to their feelings and actions

  • Identify their strengths, what they enjoy, and what they're good at

  • Know when they need help and how to ask for it

  • Build confidence in their abilities

  • Accept that making mistakes is part of learning

  • Develop a positive sense of self

Every child develops self-awareness skills at their own pace. We also coach each child holistically, covering a variety of skill areas that might also be associated with self-management, responsible decision making, or social skills.

Each week, parents receive detailed updates and strategies for reinforcing learning at home.

6 Breathing Techniques That Help Kids Calm Down

Emotional regulation is key to improving a child's self-awareness, first by helping them recognize their emotions and then build confidence in their ability to calm themselves down. When a child is having a "meltdown" it is a neurological response, which can be addressed first through calming the body. Download our breathing techniques handout to see how you can start to help your child self-sooth.
